Discus – Standing Throw

NB: As we do not have a protective cage for discus we are only able to teach the standing throw.

Purpose

*  Develop effective use of the legs

Teaching Points

  1. Take straddle position with discus in throwing position.
  2. The discus is held in place by momentum so only the outside joint of the fingers should overlap the discus.
  3. Bend the throwing-side knee (rear), transferring weight over the foot.
  4. Non-throwing leg is relaxed and extended; arm is out to the side.
  5. Thrower winds up to facing opposite direction before starting release rotation.
  6. Release rotoation starts with ankle, then knee, then hip, then shoulder, transferring weight behind discus.
  7. Thrower is facing direction of throw upon release of the discus.
Points of Emphasis: Hip rotation progressively increases with proper weight transfer
Focus only on leg action and weight transfer
