Welcome to the Tawa Intermediate mathematics webpages. These pages hold information on howwe structure our mathematics programs at Tawa Intermediate and also contain linksand games for our students to use both at home and at school.
The New Zealand Curriculum document states that “In mathematics and statistics, students explore relationships in quantities, space, and data and learn to express these relationships in ways that help them to make sense of the world aroundthem” (p. 19).
Our classroom Number programs are underpinned by the Intermediate Numeracy Project to allow us to explore Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, and Proportion and Ratio strategies with the students. Number involves calculation andestimation and knowing when it is more appropriate to use a mental or written method. The numeracy strategies assist students to calculate in a variety of differentways.
Another core mathematical area is Algebra which involves generalising and representing the patterns and relationships found in numbers, shapes, and measures.
We use the achievement objectives in the New Zealand Curriculum document to construct our learning programs for the areaswhich follow. The document outlines these areas in the following ways:
Geometry and Measurement. Geometry involves recognising and using the properties and symmetries of shapes anddescribing position and movement. Measurement involves quantifying the attributes of objects, using appropriate units and instruments. It also involves predicting and calculating rates of change.
Statistics involves identifying problems that can be explored by the use of appropriate data, designing investigations, collecting data, exploring and using patterns and relationships in data, solving problems, and communicating findings. Statistics also involves interpreting statistical information, evaluating databased arguments, and dealing with uncertainty and variation.
