Learning Support

Tawa Intermediate caters for students with learning needs, both in class and through specialised programmes. 

Our SENCo coordinates programmes that are led by a well-resourced kaihāpai/learning support team.  This currently includes a fully qualified ESOL teacher, ORS teacher, Feuerstein-trained staff and a team of kaiawhina/teacher aides. 

External services can also include liaison with SPELD, who operate on site, RTLB and Special Education Services.  

Transition

We value having a strong transition process starting with our open morning and nights in August, then meeting with primary schools in term 4 to discuss transition profiles as well as welcoming Year 6 students in for a visit to experience a snapshot of intermediate school life.  Parents of students with additional needs are encouraged to share information about their child with our SENCo, often coming in for a meeting to discuss supports and plan a successful transition together.

ORS 

Our kaiāwhina team have a strong relational approach and are a highly effective team.  We have worked with a wide range of ORS students and are confident using AAC, particularly coreboards and Talkers.  We work closely with whanau focusing on a strengths-based approach, life skills and personal interests. Visuals, timetables, social stories and regulation are integral to our day-to-day practice.

Neurodiversity

Our classrooms use strategies and techniques that support all students to learn but are particularly beneficial to neurodiverse learners such as presenting information clearly so that it is easily accessible, breaking tasks into small manageable parts, using clear fonts, sharing success criteria, and providing students with a clear visual timetable for the day.  

Groups and additional programmes

We offer support for students in small groups across a range of areas - academic, social, growth mindset focused as well as support with regulation and executive function.  

This year so far we have run Literacy groups across each syndicate with small numbers of students focusing on reading comprehension skills, fluency and developing vocabulary in writing.
