Celebrating excellence

Designed by a student here at Tawa Intermediate, the Te Iti Kahurangi medals reflect our school’s story, and our association with Ngati Toa Rangatira. The medals are awarded annually to students who have consistently shown manaakitanga, and who have excelled in sporting, cultural and academic pursuits. They are grouped under our values, and represent:

i) TUPU excellence in achievement

ii) AUMANGEA outstanding commitment and courage

iii) KOTAHITANGA outstanding service/contribution to the school culture

Team Awards are given to students from each team who are committed, courageous learners.

Awarua Award : The story of the taniwha who wanted to fly reminds us of the importance of dreaming big, working hard, building strong friendships and working with others. Awarua is seen as the kaitiaki of the Parirua harbour - continuing to protect and serve.

Rereroa Award: Rereroa, the albatross, was the friend who gave advice and helped others achieve their dreams. She had the strength and resilience to face the winds of Te Moana o Raukawa, flying across great oceans without having to land.

Kupe Award: As he left known shores to navigate across the ocean, Kupe showed courage, tenacity and leadership. His story, just like his anchor stone, sits firmly as part of Aotearoa's legacy, and reminds us to consider our own legacy.

Maunga Award: A key feature of our local landscape, Rangituhi reminds us that great things are achieved through effort. We can, one step after the other, reach great heights.
